My 3-year-old-son recently jumped up on the tailpipe of a motorcycle barefooted and received second degree burns over most of the bottom of his feet.
A man stopped on a motorcycle to ask if we’d like to have our lawn mowed. My son ran past me in a blonde blur and jumped onto the tailpipe before I could grab him. He wasn’t wearing any shoes. I grabbed him off quickly but the damage had been done. His feet were badly burned. He began to scream in pain, and once I realized how badly he was hurt, I put him in my car and headed for the emergency room. He was screaming and begging me to do something. I told him to pray and ask Jesus to take away the pain. What happened next was astounding.
We both began to pray, and he was crying and talking to Jesus like he was his best friend. “Jesus, please don’t let it hurt any more,” he cried over and over again. As I was wiping my own tears away, I realized… this was REAL prayer. No religiosity, no ritual, no half-heartedness. A chill ran through me. This 3-year-old was speaking to someone he knew was just as REAL as he was. There was no doubt he BELIEVED Jesus was listening, and there was no doubt he KNEW Jesus could do something about the situation. He just kept praying, “Jesus, please don’t let it hurt any more.” It reminded me of a passage in the book of Hebrews which refers to the manner in which Jesus prayed ; “Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard…” (Hebrews 5:7). And was heard. This was fervent prayer. And as James said, “the fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much”. (James 5:16)
Once we got to the hospital, they took us in right away. But before the doctor could examine him, the boy went to sleep. He just stopped crying and went to sleep. The doctor examined him, determined he had second degree burns, and treated him accordingly – all while he slept. The doctor gave some prescriptions, one of which was a pain medication. He told me second degree burns are extremely painful and I would need to see that the boy was given this medicine for the pain.
My son slept through the night, and when he awoke the next morning… NO PAIN. He got up and walked all over the house in bandages. For weeks while the wounds healed, he never once complained, and I never once gave him the pain medicine. When I asked him, he would say “It doesn’t hurt.” The doctor was amazed he was walking on those burns! But Jesus had done just what my son had asked him to. “Jesus, please don’t let it hurt any more.” If we could get this in our spirit and pray with this kind of faith, walk with this kind of faith, we could touch God in ways we can’t even imagine. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will by no means enter it.” (Mark 10:14-15).
Take the church to someone this week – you’ll both benefit.
